We are all familiar with the concept of ‘FIFO,’ or ‘First In First Out,’ a method employed in inventory management and logistics. In this system, the oldest inventory items are used or sold first, ensuring that newer items are retained for a longer period. Interestingly, this method finds application beyond inventory management, drawing parallels with our mental processes, particularly during adversities in our personal lives.
Various approaches and techniques aim to understand, manage, and optimize our mental processes for overall well-being, thus helping us overcome our personal adversities. Here are a few related concepts :
Cognitive Inventory:
This involves assessing or being aware of one’s cognitive processes, including thoughts, beliefs, and attitudes. Cognitive inventory is often explored in cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) to identify and challenge negative thought patterns.
Mindfulness and Awareness:
Practices related to mindfulness involve taking stock of one’s thoughts and emotions in the present moment. Techniques such as mindfulness meditation encourage individuals to observe their mental states without judgment.
Self-Reflection:
Engaging in self-reflection involves taking an inventory of one’s experiences, emotions, and reactions, contributing to personal growth and awareness
Emotional Inventory:
This concept involves recognizing and understanding one’s emotions(which triggers one’s feelings). Emotional intelligence is a key aspect of mental well-being and includes the ability to identify and manage emotions effectively.
Internal Dialogue:
Internal dialogue refers to the ongoing conversation individuals have with themselves, which is more of self-talk. Analyzing and understanding this internal dialogue can provide insights into cognitive processes.
During our career journey, we may experience confusion or face concerns due to myriad factors like lack of upward mobility, toxic work culture, lack of meaningful work-related tasks, unfair appraisal review, etc. In the current ongoing scenario of IT recession, some may even face career setbacks arising due reorganization, mergers & acquisitions for absolutely no fault of theirs.
All the above-mentioned techniques play a crucial role in dealing with adversities faced in our professional spaces, aiding in the overall career well-being of an individual.
Career Design Counselling, adapting the framework of the latest career intervention, is a unique and proven technique factoring all the above concepts in its application to provide career guidance along with addressing the client’s career concerns. This wholesome approach is guided by a career design counselor
In line with the FIFO approach, our career journeys also when faced with dilemmas or adversities require processing our career experiences to let go of some garbage within ourselves at times.
This garbage could be present in the form of some unpleasant work-based scenarios like conflicting interpersonal relationships, poor work cultures etc. This necessitates self-reflection of our careers and some aspects of our life experiences. The aspects of emotional inventory(feelings experienced) are enquired by the counselor during this process.
The client’s current career problems are addressed by the counselor keeping in mind the mindfulness aspect. The internal negative self-talks are also simultaneously addressed which could resolve issues arising from low self-worth, feeling of overwhelmness, or confusion in charting their next course of career journey.
Throughout the process, clients are guided in solving their career concerns and crafting their plan of action by bringing more intentionality to their approach. The most important aspect of this process is improving their overall career well-being.
