While there is much discussion about the shift in the career landscape—from traditional to contemporary careers—there is also a growing emphasis on employability, which now primarily depends on an individual’s skills and expertise. Conventional factors like seniority and experience, which were once considered career norms, are now becoming less dominant in career progression.
Given this shift, how can a contemporary approach to career counseling—specifically, Career Design Counselling—help experienced industry professionals manage uncertainties and gain clarity in their career decisions?”
Consider the case of Raghu (name changed), an IT professional with 12 years of experience, who came to me for career counseling. He was struggling with confidence due to the unpredictable nature of interviews in his field (Analytics). With numerous opportunities available, he often felt overwhelmed. Additionally, repeated interview rejections led him to question his skills and abilities. He sought counseling not only for reassurance that his feelings were valid but also for guidance on how to move forward.
Through my Career Design Counselling process, I addressed Raghu’s career concerns through three structured stages:
- Career Reflection and Exploration – I guided him in reflecting on his educational and career journey. We explored his interests, values, and beliefs while assessing his current work environment to identify where he might best fit.
- Crystallization and Specification – I helped him engage in broader career exploration based on his preferences and interests. This phase enhanced his career readiness, enabling him to make informed decisions regarding his occupational or educational path.
- Implementation – In this action phase, I worked with Raghu to transition from feeling overwhelmed to setting clear, actionable career goals for the future.
Here’s what Raghu had to say about the impact of my Career Design Counselling process:
“The sessions and the information document helped me clarify my career path. After researching industry trends, job openings, and LinkedIn posts, I’ve decided to pursue a technical/functional role in Data Analytics, focusing on data analysis, credit risk, and collection predictions. Given my background in banking and technology, I aim to continue in this field—initially as an individual contributor and later transition into a technical architect role. The structured approach in the document helped me systematically narrow down my industry, focus area, and job role.”
Thus, my Career Design Counselling Framework empowered Raghu to take control of his career journey and confidently move forward.
