Sailing through Career Confusion in Mid-Career: Challenges and Solutions

“Basically I am just confused now where to go because  I am not a fresher anymore. I cannot think of going for higher studies so easily at this stage. I am quite experienced now, like I am already 35, and I don’t know what to do. Which career I should go for? will it be a struggle for me to switch over there? It is ok to start all over again but I am not sure where to go. …Like I don’t know what all career paths are available for me right now, which I can think off and go there”

One of my clients from the IT industry having 13 yrs work exp., had these thoughts running through her mind when she approached me. And I am sure this would hold good for many who fall in this age group irrespective of the job sector they are associated with.

Basically, when we begin our career journeys, we start with an aspirational mindset, but why is it that when we reach our mid-30s we face such conflicting thoughts?

How do we overcome similar feelings?

There are many factors contributing to these thoughts.

• Most of us seek a stable work pattern at this stage, but given the ambiguous nature of our work roles and tasks, we find it difficult to gauge how our career journey will unfold.
• Many of us after having deeply invested in an optimistic career journey so far, look forward to bigger roles but practically face challenges in this upward mobility (the top of the pyramid being lean, further adding to this jinx).
• Some others would be keen to venture into another domain but then how does one go about it? will it be the right move, what are the repercussions, etc. These and many other questions will leave them pondering for solutions

While the concerns at this stage may be different for different individuals, they are likely to take a toll on their personal motivation level to carry on with their day-to-day tasks.
